About Bhedaghat

Bhedaghat is a town and nagar panchayat in Jabalpur district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The town is well known for the magnificent and splendid waterfalls along with its striking marble rocks that are 100 feet high & located on either sides of the Narmada River. There are many popular Bollywood movies and songs that are shot amidst these marble rocks. Tourists from not only India but all over the world come here to experience the magic of nature. The land of Bhedaghat is blessed with undulating hills, river, temples and geological sites.

About Bhedaghat

The famous tourist places here are Dhuandhar Falls, Marble Rocks and Chaunsath Yogini Temple. The city is divided into 15 wards for which elections are held every 5 years.

Geography of Bhedaghat

Bhedaghat is located at geographical coordinates of 23.132°N and 79.801°E with an average elevation of 411 meters or 1348 feet. The city is located around 20 KM from the Jabalpur city on the sides of river Narmada. The best time to visit here is November to May. During this time, there is a large number of tourists who flock here to experience the marvelous views of Marble Rocks.

Transport in Bhedaghat

Reaching Bhedaghat is quite easy with all means of transport well connected to the city. There are frequent buses and local taxis plying between different nearby cities from here. Jabalpur railway station is the nearest major railway station from here that is located at a distance of around 20 KM. One can even hop on a flight to the nearest Jabalpur airport that also not very far from the city.

Culture of Bhedaghat

Hindi is the local language spoken here. There are many delicious local cuisines that one can enjoy here. Per census of 2011, city has a population of 6,657 of which 3,533 are males and 3,124 are females. The majority of the population, around 97%, here is Hindus. The city has a literacy rate of 76.27% which is higher than the state average of 69.32%.

The Marble Rocks: It is a spectacular 100 feet rock series that is located on both sides of the river Narmada. With the morning sunshine, the white marble rocks produce shadows of the mountains in the river which is a fabulous sight. One can enjoy boat ride in the cool waters of Narmada to get an amazing experience here. Boating during full moon light is very popular among the tourists to get a memorable experience. Recently, lighting facilities are also added here to add beauty to the rocks. Adventure lovers can even try crossing the swollen river through a ropeway. It is also the place where many famous Bollywood movie songs have been shot. This is the place where Shahrukh Khan wooed Kareena Kapoor in the film "Asoka" with song "Raat Ka Nasha Abhi". Also, the recent movie scene of Crocodile fight in the movie "Mohenjo-daro" was shot here between the marble rocks.
 
Dhuandhar Falls: The Dhuandhar Falls are located on Narmada River and are 30 meters high. The Narmada River when flowing through the marble rocks narrows down to plunge into a waterfall known as Dhuandhar. It produces a powerful sound like a roar that can be heard from a distance and it appears like smoke coming out from water. Dhuandhar comes from Hindi word Dhuan (smoke) and Dhar (flow) meaning smoke flow that gives a smoke like feeling. The best time to visit the falls is Sharad Purnima when Narmada Mahotsav is also celebrated. When moon light falls on the white marbles, it gives a spectacular silver appearance. During sunset, the white marble appears yellow and getting on a boat ride during this time gives a wonderful experience. Cable car service is also available at the Dhuandhar waterfalls. One can access the waterfalls from the east bank or west bank of Narmada River and use the cable car to see the other side.

Chaunsath Yogini Temple: It is one of the oldest heritage sites of India that was built in 10th century AD by the Kaluchuri Kingdom. The temple is the abode of Goddess Durga along with 64 yoginis. The temple is located near the Narmada River and famous marble rocks. The temple is situated on a hill top and there are 150 steps to be climbed to reach the temple. The temple has 64 shrines in circular motion, one for each yogini, and a main shrine where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati can be seen riding on Nandi, the sacred bull. The idols of yoginis are exquisitely carved and each one depicts a unique posture. The temple looks beautiful in sunlight.
